Specialist Colorectal Surgeon
Dr David Mackrill is a specialist colorectal surgeon who consults and operates at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Mackay. From here he provides specialist care for patients with disorders of the colon, rectum, and anus across the Mackay and Whitsunday area and beyond.
Dr Mackrill graduated from the University of Sheffield School of Medicine in the UK in 2004 and undertook his basic surgical training in the North of England before moving to Australia. Here he completed his surgical training in South-East Queensland, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2016. Dr Mackrill then completed further post fellowship training in the field of colorectal surgery before moving to Mackay in 2019 to set up his practice.
Dr Mackrill’s colorectal experience includes time working with the colorectal surgeons at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, Greenslopes Private Hospital, and Logan Hospital in South-East Queensland during his formal surgical training. This was followed by his formal colorectal training at the John Flynn Private Hospital, Tweed Head Hospital, and Gold Coast University Hospital with some of the pioneers of minimally invasive colorectal surgery. This led to him becoming skilled in the arts of laparoscopic colorectal resections including advanced techniques such as TAMIS and the formation of intracorporeal anastomoses.
Dr Mackrill’s colorectal expertise includes the management of colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, and functional bowel disorders such as constipation and obstructive defecation. He also treats anal and perianal disease such as anal fistula, fissure, haemorrhoids, and both cancerous and precancerous anal lesions. He is also a GESA certified endoscopist regularly performing colonoscopies and upper GI endoscopies. He participates in the CCRTGE colonoscopy recertification program and his colonic polyp detection rate is well above the national average.
Dr Mackrill regularly works with other specialists at the Mater to provide holistic care for other conditions. He works with the local gynaecological surgeons to provide multidisciplinary management of complex pelvic organ prolapse and endometriosis. Dr Mackrill also works with the gastroenterology team at EndosQ to help patients with inflammatory bowel disease when they need surgical therapy. For cancers of the colon, rectum, and anus, a multidisciplinary approach is required to provide the best patient outcomes. Dr Mackrill works with the chemotherapy and radiotherapy specialists at the Icon Cancer Centre here in Mackay so patients with these malignancies can have all their treatment locally rather than having to travel to Brisbane or Townsville.
Dr Mackrill has published and presented in national surgical journals and scientific meetings. He continues to contribute to evidenced based medicine by contributing to national and international studies such as the ISGSS, ADIPOSe, and QUEST collaborations. He is also the supervisor for the junior doctor training program at the Mater and runs the grand rounds education program there.
